What this job actually involves

Free knotweed ID from a photo — how it works here

Free knotweed ID from a photo in Stockport

Plenty of garden plants get mistaken for knotweed, among them bindweed, dogwood, Russian vine and Himalayan balsam. Before you pay for anything, send a clear photo of a leaf, a length of stem and, if you can, the whole plant. If it is something else we say so and that is that. If it is knotweed, or the picture is not clear enough, we offer a visit.

Taking a photo we can identify

A close picture of one whole leaf, a close picture of a stem section including a joint, and a wide shot of the full plant with something for scale, such as a spade or a wheelie bin. Daylight beats a better phone. In winter, snap a dead cane and, if you can, one snapped open to show the hollow middle.

A reply saying what we think it is and how sure we are. Quite often it is a harmless look-alike and you can stop there. If it is knotweed, we explain what a survey involves and what it costs, and you choose whether to go on. There is no sales push attached.

Some plants are half buried in brambles, cut to the ground or covered in ivy, and a photo cannot settle the matter. We would rather suggest a short visit than guess.

  3. Spray or excavate.

A programme across several seasons, or digging it out when the date will not move.

  4. Report and aftercare.

Questions about free knotweed id from a photo

Does a winter photo work?
Often, yes. Dead canes are quite recognisable, so send a close-up of one joint and any leaf litter around the base.
How do I know if it is Japanese knotweed?
Start with the stem: hollow like bamboo, flecked purple and bending in a zig-zag at every joint. The leaves are shield-shaped with a flat edge where the stalk joins, and in late summer it throws up sprays of cream flowers. Old brown canes can stand through the whole winter. Sending us a photo is quicker than comparing pictures on your phone.
Is it illegal to have knotweed in my garden?
No, owning land with knotweed on it is not an offence. The law is broken if you let it spread into the wild, and soil or cuttings count as controlled waste. If it moves into a neighbour's garden, they may be entitled to bring a claim against you.
Will knotweed stop me getting a mortgage?
It does not rule one out. Plenty of lenders will go ahead if there is a professional survey, a treatment plan and an insurance-backed guarantee that can pass to the buyer.
How long does treatment take?
Most spraying programmes run for three to five growing seasons, with monitoring afterwards. Digging it out takes days rather than years, but the bill is a good deal higher.
Can I just dig it out myself?
We would not. Small fragments of rhizome regrow, and the soil cannot go in your wheelie bin or be taken to the household waste site.
